The multi-municipal system for sorting, collecting, recovering, and treating urban solid waste in the North Central region, RESINORTE, was created and established on October 20, 2009, through Decree-Law No. 235/2009, later amended by Decree-Law No. 106/2014 of July 2.
This system covers a geographical area of 8,031 km² and serves a population of approximately one million inhabitants, generating around 400,000 tons of urban waste per year.
RESINORTE is the concessionaire of the North-Central System and, since July 28, 2015, is a company with majority private capital, with a share capital of €8,000,000. This capital is distributed as follows: 75.1% belongs to Empresa Geral de Fomento, S.A., and the remaining 24.9% is distributed among some municipalities that use the system, either directly or through associations.
